Venus Retrograde in Scorpio —
The Art of Becoming One
This morning, with the wind moving around me and thunder breaking open the sky, I found myself tracing my own skin with my fingers and nails, drawing invisible sigils of devotion onto my body. Devotion to this moment, this body, this breath, this life moving through me.
Somewhere between a yawn, a sigh, the sound of my own voice and the feather-light scribble of fingertips across my skin, something clicked. Can all of this be here for me? Can I meet myself with the same depth with which I have always met life? Can I enter my own body as completely as I have entered love, longing, another human being, God? Can I merge with myself?
Venus has entered the shadow of her coming retrograde, beginning a journey that will take her through Scorpio and back into Libra before she crosses this territory again. I have been feeling the movement before having words for it. Love, desire, sexuality, intimacy, value, relationship, the ways I give myself and the places where I have left myself behind inside that giving. Old material is rising, but it is meeting a different woman now.
There is something deeply Scorpionic about the movement of a retrograde itself. The return. The descent. The willingness to go back into territory already crossed because something underneath it has not yet been fully retrieved.
Venus carries the questions of what I love, what I desire, what I value, what I find beautiful, how I relate and what I am willing to receive. In Scorpio, these questions refuse to remain polite abstractions. They descend into the body, sexuality, power, attachment, loss, intimacy, death and transformation. They ask what love costs when I abandon myself for it, and what love becomes when I no longer do.
I don’t believe the planets are writing my story for me. Astrology does something more interesting when it illuminates something I have already been living so precisely that a light suddenly turns on in a chamber I have inhabited my entire life.
Scorpio is one of those chambers in the castle.
None of my so-called Big Three are in Scorpio, yet Scorpio runs through my birth chart like an underground river. Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Pluto and my South Node are all there. And now Venus is preparing to retrace this territory in the sky, illuminating the very part of my nature I have spent years trying to understand, regulate, protect and sometimes overcome.
Love. Death. Sex. Eros. Transformation. The underworld and whatever is willing to take me deeper into the experience itself.
I have always experienced life osmotically. I have called it sensitivity, clairsentience, hypervigilance, trauma, empathy. I have studied it through psychology and the nervous system and wondered how much of this way of perceiving other people was born from having to read my surroundings very carefully. All of these perspectives have given me something, but now a different question has opened.
What if some part of this was never meant to be healed away? Something to ”leave behind”? What if beneath all the adaptations lives a creature whose way of knowing life is through entering deeply into relationship with it?
I don’t stand comfortably on the shore of experience. I enter the water. When something becomes my teacher, I don’t learn its lesson from a safe intellectual distance. I enter it, become intimate with it, sometimes become the very thing I am trying to understand. The lesson loops and deepens until knowledge becomes cellular.
All my deepest lessons have been about coming One with the very thing I’m researching. Addiction, Death, Nature, God, all of them.
This has been especially true in love. Soul-merging is not a metaphor to me. There are encounters in which I experience the boundary between myself and another becoming extraordinarily thin. I feel through relationship. I learn through relationship. I descend through relationship.
For a long time I thought maturation meant learning not to do this. Now I understand that merging and losing myself are not the same thing. I don’t need to become less permeable. I need to become more deeply rooted in myself.
This changes the entire meaning of individuation. The purpose of becoming an individual is not to seal myself away from life. It is to develop a self strong enough to surrender without disappearing.
My core needs to become lava-proof. Not because the lava must stop flowing, but because I want to be able to enter the volcano. I want a heart capable of meeting the wildest storm while something at the centre remains utterly still, like the eye of the storm. I want to love with everything I have without abandoning the one who is loving. I want intimacy without self-erasure, permeability with discernment, surrender with a centre strong enough to hold it.
This is where the Scorpio–Taurus axis becomes so alive for me. Scorpio knows how to descend, while Taurus knows how to remain. Scorpio enters the mystery completely, reaching underneath appearances into the places where love and death meet, where desire strips away pretence and where one thing dies so something more truthful can live. Taurus puts a hand on the earth and reminds me to stay here, in the body, in the breath, in my own rhythm, rooted in what belongs to me.
And this is where the coming Venus retrograde feels deeply personal. It is not asking me to become less Scorpionic in love.
It is turning my attention toward the way this depth has been lived. What is essential here, underneath the adaptations? What belongs to my nature, and what was built around it for survival? Where has surrender become self-abandonment? Where has sensitivity become vigilance? Where has union become disappearance? What remains when those things are separated from one another?
The direction of the merging has already begun to change.
For so much of my life, this enormous capacity has moved toward something outside me: a person, love, God, nature, a mystery, an experience large enough to dissolve into. My surrender to God has been part of the same movement, this desire to give myself to life so completely that there is no longer a separate little self standing outside existence trying to control what happens next.
Soul-merging with Life.
Now the movement is turning inward. I am calling the scattered parts home, entering my own body, feeling my breath from inside it, allowing my own touch to become intimate. I am discovering that Eros does not begin in the space between myself and another person. It is already here.
Life is already moving inside my veins as blood, plasma, breath, heat, sound and sensation. I can know that I am more than my body and still become exquisitely intimate with the fact that life is taking bodily form here.
My capacity to experience oneness with anything is inseparable from my capacity to experience connection with myself. I cannot become one with life while remaining estranged from my own experience. I cannot surrender to God while abandoning the body through which I experience God. I cannot merge deeply with another soul without knowing the shape of my own.
This is why self-love has begun to mean something entirely different to me. It is no longer an affirmation or an idea I am trying to believe.
It is inhabitation.
It is the willingness to be present for my own existence with the same ferocity, curiosity and devotion with which I have entered everything I have ever loved. To touch my own skin and actually be there, to hear my voice and inhabit it, to feel desire moving and remain inside myself as it moves, to let pleasure belong here before it belongs anywhere else.
And suddenly I understand something about the intensity I have spent so much of my life trying to manage. Depth itself was never the problem. My depth was never asking to be cured. It was asking for a self strong enough to inhabit it.
I don’t want to get over soul-merging. I don’t want to become someone who loves from a carefully measured distance or trade the underworld for the surface because the surface is easier to navigate. I want to learn the more difficult art of going all the way in while remaining deeply rooted in myself.
To surrender without disappearing. To experience union without abandoning my own centre. To let another human being touch the deepest chambers of me without handing them the keys to my existence. To allow love to transform me without requiring it to destroy me first.
This is what I want to carry into the Venus retrograde. Not a list of predictions, but a living inquiry into the nature of Love itself. What do I value now? What is sacred to me in relationship? What kind of intimacy allows my depth to remain a gift? What does it take to meet someone whose way of loving is not to stand at the edge, but to enter? What does devotion look like when devotion to another no longer requires betrayal of myself?
Venus will cross this territory three times. I find something beautiful in that image. The first passage reveals. The retrograde returns and retrieves. The final passage carries the material forward again. Not as the same woman who entered, but as someone who has touched what was buried there.
And I can already feel what is being retrieved.
The part of me that loves all the way down.
The part I tried to protect by withdrawing from life. The part whose permeability I mistook for weakness. The part whose depth I tried to regulate into something safer. The part that knows intimacy not as proximity, but as participation.
This is the red thread Scorpio has been carrying through my life all along. A relentless movement toward intimacy with what is real, toward the places where separation becomes thin enough to see through.
I was never meant to outgrow the depth.
I was meant to become strong enough to live there.
…
I would also love to hear of other Scorpios or strong Scorpio placement people, does this level of intensity resonate for you? Can you feel the upcoming Venus retrograde in your bones already?
