Clearing the Field for Venus
There is an astrological thread running through my contemplation on taking my energy back that became too interesting for me to leave as a footnote.
Earlier this year, around the Scorpio Full Moon, I wrote:
“The Scorpio Full Moon opened a door within me that could no longer be closed.”
What followed was an inquiry into agreements. I found myself looking at family systems, inherited patterns, energetic bonds, roles, collective structures and all the places where participation itself had become a form of consent. The central question underneath it all was simple:
Where is my life force invested?
Now, months later, I am contemplating closing doors. When I looked at the astrological movement between these two moments, a surprisingly coherent sequence appeared.
Scorpio Full Moon → See the agreements.
What am I bound to? Where have I invested my power, attention and life force?
The months between → Live through what has been revealed.
Let the insight move out of the mind and into the actual structures of life.
Pisces Lunar Eclipse → Release what has completed.
What am I willing to let dissolve now that I have seen it clearly?
Venus enters her retrograde shadow → Clear the field.
Where am I still maintaining relationships, possibilities and forms of belonging that no longer carry life?
Venus retrograde in Scorpio → Return to the root of desire.
What do I truly value? What do I actually want? What deserves my life force now?
Venus meets the Sun → Something new is seeded.
When old values and attachments have been stripped back, what remains alive underneath them?
Venus retrograde into Libra → Reconsider how I meet another.
What are relationship, reciprocity and partnership when I no longer need another person to give me belonging?
Venus turns direct and eventually returns to Scorpio → Choose and embody.
Live according to what the descent revealed.
That is the simple map.
What fascinates me is how closely it resembles what has already been happening in my life without me consciously trying to follow an astrological script.
Around the Scorpio Full Moon I wrote about releasing bonds, agreements and roles that maintained an old reality. I wrote about withdrawing from dynamics I no longer wanted to participate in and choosing again. At the end of that contemplation another sentence appeared:
“The void no longer terrifies me. It is the place where new life can finally emerge.”
At the time I did not know how literally life would return me to that statement.
The Scorpio Full Moon opened the door. Scorpio took me underneath the visible structures of relationship and into the bonds beneath them: power, intimacy, entanglement, shared energy, unconscious agreements, what we exchange and what keeps us tied together long after the conscious mind believes it has moved on.
Scorpio asked: What am I bound to?
Months later, around the Pisces lunar eclipse, the movement changed. What had been revealed was asking to be released. The inquiry moved from recognizing the bond to allowing a completed form to disappear.
Pisces asks: Can I let it go?
And now Venus has entered the territory of her coming retrograde cycle through Scorpio and Libra. The question changes again.
Venus asks: What is actually worthy of my love, attention and life force?
This feels especially intimate to me because I have Venus in Scorpio natally. I have also spent a great deal of this year contemplating Venus and Inanna, descent and return, desire, relationship, the feminine mysteries and the strange intelligence of cycles within cycles.
And here comes another one.
Venus begins her retrograde journey in Scorpio before returning into Libra. I experience those two territories as deeply connected to what has already been unfolding. Scorpio goes underneath the relationship and asks what binds us there. What are the invisible exchanges? Where does desire come from? What remains attached when the visible relationship has already changed? What have I mistaken for intimacy because intensity once felt like connection?
Libra brings the inquiry into the space between two people. How do I meet another? What is reciprocity now? What kind of partnership reflects the values I actually inhabit rather than the ones I inherited? What happens to relationship when belonging is no longer something I am asking another person to give me?
Between those movements, retrograde Venus meets the Sun. This conjunction is one of the central turning points of the Venus cycle. Venus disappears into the light of the Sun before emerging into another phase of her journey. In the mythic language I have been contemplating through Inanna, it is difficult not to feel the resonance with descent, stripping away and return.
What fascinates me most is that this does not feel like preparation for a prediction. I have no interest in deciding that Venus retrograde means an old lover will return or a new relationship will appear. The far more compelling possibility is that the entire field of desire is being cleared before the next movement becomes visible.
This year has felt like clearing the table.
Old agreements have been examined. Family roles have been questioned. Relationships have shown me where connection requires too much translation or effort. My longing for community has revealed the difference between being welcomed and actually belonging. My understanding of trust has changed. My relationship with emptiness has changed.
And now I find myself wanting to close doors. Not angrily, and not because everything behind them was wrong. I simply want my energy available.
There is something deeply Venusian in that question for me. Attention is an investment. Desire is an investment. Relationship is an investment. Remaining available is an investment. Every yes gives life to something.
So what deserves my yes now?
This is where the Inanna symbolism becomes especially alive for me. Her descent is a stripping away. At each gate something is removed until there is nothing left to use as status, protection or identity. I have spent a long time contemplating those gates in my own life, and I find myself approaching this Venus cycle with the same curiosity.
What remains desirable when the ornaments have been removed? What does love look like when it no longer has to rescue me from loneliness? What does belonging become when I already belong? What kind of relationship can enter when I stop keeping old relationships alive simply because I fear the space they leave behind? What does my own desire say when the voices of inherited agreements, old wounds, collective expectations and familiar roles become quiet enough for me to hear it?
This brings me back to the void.
The Scorpio Full Moon opened the door into the work.
Scorpio: See it.
The Pisces eclipse brought the movement of release.
Pisces: Let it go.
The Venus shadow asks me to stop filling the space with what has already completed itself.
Clear the field.
Venus descends through Scorpio and back into Libra.
What do I value? What do I desire? How do I want to meet another?
And eventually Venus moves forward again.
Choose from what remains.
I am standing at the beginning of that movement now, unplugging cords without knowing what will eventually take their place. And I don’t want to use this Venus retrograde to predict what is coming. I want to enter it with a cleared table. I want to hear what desire sounds like when it does not arise from lack and discover what I value when I am no longer negotiating with old agreements.
A womb does not create by filling itself with whatever happens to be available. It remains receptive to the form that is actually trying to become life.
And this is also why I chose The Star from Elisabeth Haich’s The Wisdom of the Tarot as the image for this contemplation.
Elisabeth Haich has been a meaningful figure on my path ever since I first read Initiation. Her understanding of initiation, consciousness and the symbolic language of inner transformation left a deep imprint on me, and her work has had a strange way of returning at important thresholds.
The Star feels particularly right here.
In the Tarot, she comes after the Tower, after a structure has already fallen. She kneels naked beneath the stars, pouring water back into the living world. There is nothing left to defend and no new tower being hurriedly constructed in place of the old one. She is exposed to the vastness, yet completely engaged with life.
For me, The Star represents the birth of trust.
That is where this whole cycle seems to have brought me. After seeing the agreements, withdrawing my participation and allowing completed forms to end, I am left with the space they occupied.
The Star does not rush to fill it. She pours her water freely into the earth and the greater waters. She participates without clutching. She gives without trying to control what comes back. She stands beneath a larger order without demanding to know where it will lead her next.
That is the quality I want to carry into this Venus cycle.
The door opened.
I walked through it.
Now I am closing it behind me.
Scorpio revealed the bonds.
Pisces dissolves what is complete.
Venus asks what is worth choosing now.
The table is cleared.
The Star is above me.
And Venus is descending into the empty room.
